Pantone® Color of the Year 2018 Conversation

Pantone® Color of the Year 2018 Conversation

Pantone® has published their Pantone® Color of the Year 2018, and it is Ultra Violet Pantone® Fashion+Home 18-3838 TCX.

Pantone’s philosophy behind the Pantone® Color of the Year 2018 Ultra Violet: It is “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade… Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, andpantone_ultraviolet visionary thinking that points us towards the future. Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet, like the vast and limitless night sky, suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, lighting the way to what is yet to come. Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, artistic brilliance, and spiritual reflection. Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and nonconformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute comments, “Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” We would love to hear your thoughts on this more esoteric direction for Pantone Pantone® Color of the Year. Should the Pantone® Color of the Year relate to fashion trends? Can esoteric meaning, consumer demand and a fashion aesthetic go together? Will following Pantone® Color of the Year convince the consumer? Here are our key colour trend contenders what we think should be considered for Pantone® Color of the Year 2018

Post your thoughts in the comments and let us know which is your favourite below!

1. Black Navy

Trendstop Colour Forecast for Fall 2018. Pantone® Fashion + Home 19-3815 TCX Evening Blue

Black Navy would suit Pantone® Color of the Year because things feel dark in the world, but there is a glimmer of hope, and a softness behind it. The news focuses on negative things, but there is a lot of kindness and everyday heroes in our communities. Black Navy is a colour for an era trying to cover up, but the blue of hopes and dreams peeks through the darkness, hailing transparency and visibility.

2. Beetroot

Trendstop Colour Forecast for Fall 2018. Pantone® Fashion + Home 19-2030 TCX Beet Red

Beetroot would suit Pantone® Color of the Year because it’s a colour of cooking and gardening but in a very style-aware way. We are no longer the housekeepers and gardeners our mothers and grandmothers were. Today there is an urban edge to these homely activities – yet the earth and the hearth still resonate within us as we try to make our way through and raise our families amidst chaos of the modern world.

3. White Putty

Trendstop Colour Forecast for Fall 2018. Pantone® Fashion + Home 11-0603 TCX Pastel Parchment

White Putty would suit Pantone® Color of the Year because its ultra soft and warming aesthetic encourages a sense of calm and nurturing in our hectic lives. White symbolises purity and wholeness to cleanse the mind and rid us of unnecessary clutter. White Putty’s subtle tint of pink offers a gentle introduction to new beginnings; a new dawn that brings equilibrium and clarity.

4. Crimson Rust and Plasma Red

Trendstop Colour Forecast for Fall 2018. Pantone® Fashion + Home Crimson Rust: 19-1557 TCX Chilli Pepper; Pantone® Fashion + Home Plasma Red: 17-1563 Cherry Tomato

Crimson Rust and Plasma Red would suit Pantone® Color of the Year because red is the most dynamic, passionate and powerful colour on the wheel. In times of political, economic and climatic upheaval, fiery red tones give us energy and strength as well as motivation and positivity. As the universal colour of love, red stimulates our desire for togetherness and promotes unity.

5. Sunglow Yellow

Trendstop Colour Forecast for Summer 2018. Pantone® Fashion + Home 13-0859 TCX Lemon Chrome

Sunglow Yellow would suit Pantone® Color of the Year because in many cultures yellow traditionally represents hope, honour and joyfulness. Studies show that yellow increases our ability to concentrate and pay attention – perhaps one reason that yellow has featured in many recent campaigns. In spiritualism yellow gemstones are said to increase positive energy and offer relief from negativity, anxiety, mental and bodily tiredness. In today’s climate of socioeconomic upset, environmental upheaval and political instability, yellow is uplifting and will really resonate with people.

6. Cool Concrete Grey

Trendstop Colour Forecast for Summer 2018. Pantone® Fashion + Home 16-3850 TCX Silver Sconce

Cool Concrete Grey would suit Pantone® Color of the Year because there has been a huge focus on gender-neutrality in the past year and this shade offers a composed and calming presence, free of gender connotations. Its cool, industrial tone is quiet and reserved whilst adopting many different guises, from the futuristic to the functional.

Beetroot would be perfect! National Garden Bureau has designated 2018 as the Year of the Beet and this would go hand-in-hand!. Each year the National Garden Bureau selects one annual, one perennial, one bulb crop and one edible as “Year of the” crops. Plants are chosen because they are popular, easy-to-grow, widely adaptable, genetically diverse, and versatile.

Loving the Sunglow yellow – it is bright, sunny, and optimistic. Seems more like a good choice for Colour of the Year for 2018.

Beetroot is more similar to Marsala, a wine colour. That was the Pantone Colour for 2015. They grey colour and the putty are too neutral, not bright enough to be the colour of the year. More like a neutral, or accent colour.

Nobody wanted to put greenery on their nails!
Bright yellow would be good if it can replace the sun we miss so much here In Canada at this time of year ;)

        Thank you for the comments!
Navy has been one of the best selling nail polish colors in London for a couple of years now. So yes, black navy will be a perfect nail polish color, it’s particularly popular for toenails.
