No strangers to each other Japanese streetwear heavyweights BAPE and NEIGHBORHOOD have come together with Adidas Originals for the release of the BAPE x NEIGHBORHOOD x Adidas Superstar Boost. The coming together of three streetwear heavyweights results in a real tour de force of design.
The BAPE x NEIGHBORHOOD x adidas Originals Superstar Boost is a contemporary update of the iconic Superstar trainer, popularised by pioneering New York hip hop group Run DMC. Updating a classic is always a risk but the Superstar Boost really delivers.
With future forward fabric combinations, a modernised upper featuring sock-fit Primeknit material and a new midsole which features a concealed ‘boost’ section ensures the style is practical as well as fashionable. The original shell-toe remains, ensuring this design stays true to the original Superstar silhouette.
The Streetwear Phenomenon
The influx of streetwear brands has rapidly grown over the past several years, with it set only to continue. With the influence of social media, street style and celebrity endorsements many once niche or little known streetwear brands have now become everyday brands as can be seen with the recent Supreme x Louis Vuitton collaboration.
BAPE and NEIGHBORHOOD are two of the originators of high end streetwear. Founded by Nigo in 1993 in Ura-Harajuku and sold to Hong Kong Fashion Conglomerate I.T group in 2011, BAPE is famous for its camo print, ape head, and Baby Milo characters. NEIGHBORHOOD was established in 1994 by motorcycle enthusiast Shinsuke Takizawa and is known for its premium selvedge denim. Both of these brands have a strong sense of identity and the products all feature recognisable key silhouettes and prints.
Their popularity means all the more reason for brands such as Adidas Originals to collaborate with them. These types of collaborations are nurturing for the future of design. The idea of taking an iconic style and injecting it with fresh influences from other designer power houses means that styles will continue to evolve. Iconic pieces will become re-invented classics that have a great sense of longevity about them.
Adidas have collaborated with BAPE (A Bathing Ape) on multiple occasions most recently back in November 2016, creating a collection of footwear and apparel focused on the NMD R1 model that featured the iconic Adidas trademarks alongside the signature camou print that BAPE is recognised for. Previously they have collaborated on the Superstar model on multiple occasions with the original Super Ape Star released in 2003 considered a holy grail for sneaker collectors. With the phenomenal success of these collaborations it is easy to see why they are continuing to join forces.
BAPE and NEIGHBORHOOD have also recently collaborated together creating a small capsule collection that was released in January this year. It featured a total mash-up of the two brands, with the familiar BAPE camou alongside the iconic skull and crossbones branding from NEIGHBORHOOD. The collection contained a variation of products from jackets to denim and even two watches that were in collaboration with the world-renowned watch maker Rolex.
When will it be available to buy?
The BAPE x NEIGHBORHOOD Adidas Superstar Boost is released on February 4th along with two other new styles from Adidas the NMD_R1 Primeknit and the NMD City Sock 1.
