Trendspiration: Embroidered 50’s Imagery

Breathing new life into vintage images, Amsterdam-based artist Hinke Schreuders revamps photos and illustrations from the 50’s with delicate embellishments. From advertising to fashion photography, layers of hand-stitched embroidery, lace, beading and ink update pictures with striking effects. These works are part of an ongoing series Hinke began in 2008, called Works on Paper, in which she sets out to “subtly confuse notions of feminine vulnerability and reinforce the notion of embroidery as an artistic medium.” Schreuders recently exhibited her designs as part of a group show titled The Embroidered Image at New York’s Robert Mann gallery, as one of 12 artists showcasing work that explores combinations of photography and textiles.

We’ll be back soon with another fresh dose of Trendspiration – stay tuned!
