We show you how to elevate the classic white shirt from a wardrobe filler to a style statement

Everyone owns a classic white shirt, though most people are generally stuck in a rut with how to wear them and how to keep the look on-trend and contemporary. The white shirt is a timeless classic and the ultimate wardrobe staple, especially the simple long sleeve button-down ones. You may be thinking, how could you make a basic item like this look stylish? So as we transition into the Spring season we thought you would enjoy some key styling directions to help you wear your white shirt.

Half un-tucked

This crisp cotton look was prominent at London Fashion Week last month and gives a slight relaxed feel to these formal outfits through the half-tuck styling alone. It works styled in a multitude of different ways from accessorizing with a long line belt left dangling long on the tucked-in side, a feminine frill or a sporty tape detail, giving you a chance still to add your own personalized stamp. Celebrities spotted sporting this look late last summer were Ashlee Simpson and Kim Kardashian (aka Mrs. Kanye West).

The Tucked-in Tomboy

Keep it simple yet striking with this play on formal meets casual. You can pair up a masculine looking work shirt with pretty much any style of jeans, whether you choose to wear your jeans low slung with your shirt buttoned high, or wear a shirt that features ultra-femme details that creates a blend between the masculine and the feminine tucked into loose-fit ripped jeans. It looks particularly strong if you wear your shirt tucked in at the front and un-tucked at the back with the cuffs left casually unbuttoned. The trick is to keep the accessories minimal, and if you do want to add some slightly bolder accessories then ensure you keep the colors monotone. Olivia Palermo, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Elizabeth Olsen all are frequent wearers of this trend.

Layered with athleisure intimates

A fashion take on styling up the work shirt is shirts with billowing sleeves which are styled successfully with intimate over layers. A move-on of the trend ‘underwear worn as outerwear’ where we now see silhouettes of the past revisited and layered-up with bandeau tops, camisoles and slip dresses which exude a youthful feel that brings back an essence of the 90’s. This type of styling is questioning traditional silhouettes and how women keep them modern through dressing. New billowed sleeves set against tight fitting strappy bandeau tops add a touch of glamour with a wide age appeal. Rita Ora has been seen modeling this ensemble.

Casually belted

With a nod to Trendstop’s Eastern Minimalism theme for Spring/Summer 2017, borrowed from your boyfriend white shirts look strong, paired here with satin lounge pants, a utility belt bag to match your lipstick color and a pair of minimalist white runners. It also works if you own an off-the-shoulder style white shirt, but rather than keeping the belt hidden on your slit-front pencil skirt, wear the belt high waisted over your shirt making the belt the feature. Or if you like the idea of the belt styling but prefer an edgier look opt for a printed shirt with a contrasting leather belt and leather biker jacket. Miranda Kerr works this look well.

Feminine Deconstruction

For a more feminine option, shirts are reconstructed, showing off the female form with flashes of unexpected flesh. Attention is focused on the shoulder with off-the-shoulder styles looking strong set against skinny Capri jeans, cap sleeve slashed styles and cut and sew tie detailing which also works with wrap pencil skirts and skinny jeans too. Surfaces work best in plain stark white cotton, or if a touch of pattern is needed then opt for a subtle stripe to work the look. Alexa Chung is regularly spotted wearing this style of shirt.

The Hem Flash

Or if you were looking for something a little edgier wear an oversized longline shirt styled poking out of the bottom of a skater or denim mini skirt for a layered effect in spring. It works well in either a monochrome palette or with a mix of denim and powdery cornflower blues. This youthful styling direction has been seen worn by the likes of Rihanna and Miley Cyrus.

Worn over a sweater

This is definitely a look to save till nearer the Fall. A massively modern take on the ongoing layering trend as seen at the recent Louis Vuitton ready-to-wear show at Paris Fashion Week! The newness comes from the heavier-weight layer worn as the under-layer rather than in the more predictable way. A casual touch is added to formal suiting looks with the additional knitwear under-layer. This styling direction works best when shirts are worn half unbuttoned and sleeves are rolled up to reveal the sweater layering. Celebrities such as Kristen Stewart have been seen rocking this look.

Now you can look at the white shirt in a different light, and realize it’s more than just a wardrobe filler!
