The latest phenomenon in the film world is the impending release of the live-action recreation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. To add to the excitement of the film release many fashion and accessory brands are releasing collaborative lines with Disney to create merchandise inspired by the film.
One of the stand out collaborations is by London based fashion designer Christopher Kane, who is acknowledged as one of the pioneers of contemporary design. He has tuned his distinct aesthetic and combined it with the influence of the tale of Beauty and the Beast.
Since the release of the animated version of Beauty and the Beast in 1991, the film quickly became a Disney classic. Since it was announced there would be a live-action adaptation of the iconic film it became talk of the movie world. With popular actress Emma Watson being announced to play Belle, this added to the hype and anticipation for the film. The film is due for release globally on March 17th.
Within the collection there is apparel, accessories and jewellery. The pieces exude a mystical and a highly feminine feel. A stand out aspect of the collection is the feature of a rose graphic motif that runs along the apparel and accessories. Other key features are the printed beast faces that feature on the apparel, with a stone cold expression! This aspect brings out a darker side to the collection. Another key feature that runs through the apparel is the tied bows that are reminiscent of the iconic blue dress Belle wears in the film.
The colour palette features core colours such as black and grey that sit alongside delicate pastel shades of blue and lilac. There is also an accent of metallic yellow gold which is reminiscent of Belle’s iconic dress in the film.
Christopher Kane’s traditional aesthetic remains throughout the collection, with styles such as his iconic graphic print tees, oversized sweatshirts and midi skirts. This also applies within the accessories in the collection.
This collaboration is a great blend of contemporary womenswear and familiar iconic influences from the film, that when pieced together creates a whimsical yet modern collection for both Christopher Kane and Beauty and the Beast fans alike.
Another interesting aspect to this collection is the fact that it is sustainable. Working with sustainability based consultancy company Eco-Age to create it. The purpose of Ego-Age is to encourage and assist brands to ensure their products are ecologically friendly, from the materials selected to the production of the pieces. Kane worked alongside found of Eco-Age Livia Firth to ensure the 33-piece collection was eco-friendly and the focus was on sustainability.
The influence of Beauty and the Beast
Alongside the Christopher Kane collaboration there are also multiple collaborative releases from other global brands. Apparel brands such as Juicy Couture, MinkPink and Uniqlo have all revealed their collaborative take on the Disney classic. This also carries through to jewellery and accessories with brands such as Swarovski, Asics and SUPRA all creating Beauty and the Beast inspired styles.
At Trendstop we have picked three key collaborations to look out for. The first one is by American bag designer Judith Leiber who has created an exquisite book shaped cross body bag inspired by the film with encrusted quote of ‘The Belle of the Ball’ on the front in crystals. The second piece we selected is by London based jewellery designer Alex Monroe. The rose gold pendant features a decorative mirror with the famous song lyric from the film ‘Tale as old as time’. Our third and final pick is from Australian label MinkPink. They have taken some of their signature styles but updated them with embroidery and printed graphics that are inspired by the film.
