High street store & Other Stories collaborates with New York based artist Shoplifter

High street store & Other Stories has collaborated with New York based artist Shoplifter, a.k.a Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir. The Icelandic born artist has a very distinctive style of work using hair as the main material within her work. This collection captures the essence of her work, and turns the recognisable art pieces into everyday wearable garments and fun accessories.

The Collection

The main focus of the collection is fun. Vibrant blues, purples and pinks run through both apparel and accessories. Prints are key within the looks. Textural fur inspired graphics and rope inspired prints feature creating wearable art forms. The smiley face emblem is also another distinctive aspect of Shoplifters work and this is seen throughout the collection. Enlarged smileys are a main feature within the collection. This is a signature design that is used within her art pieces frequently. The jewellery within the collection has a molten metal appearance, with uneven surfaces and organic, melted down shapes.

The Silhouette

The key overall silhouettes within the collection are kept very casual with oversized pieces that are built for comfort. Loose-cut oversized tees feature vibrant prints and fur smiley motifs from Shoplifters work. There is a luxe basics feel about the collection shapes as a whole. Sport-ready leggings are styled with oversized slouch sweats or longline tank dresses. Simple styles are elevated with the colour rich prints and distinct motifs.

The Artist

Icelandic artist Shoplifter is known best for her sculptures and installations created mostly in hair. Hair has become the main material throughout her work which derived from a fascination as a child from a cut-off braid her grandmother kept in her draw. Hair is a medium that Shoplifter feels can express a sense of disgust and beauty at the same time. Her work is extremely district, colourful and is highly tactile. Shoplifter has teamed up with other creatives and designers before to create one-off garments, so it only feels right for her to collaborate with a well known high street brand and produce a collection that reflects their aesthetic with her creative influence.
