The museum at the FIT in New York is set to stage a multimedia exhibition focusing on the fashion of the Sixties’.
The show, called “Youthquake! The 1960s Fashion Revolution”, is all about how the explosion in youth culture impacted on the decade, with music and fashion combining to create exuberant and experimental styles for the under-30s.
On display will be over 30 garments along with accessories, videos and more, all charting the youth culture explosion of the baby boomers. On view will be original Sixties’ styles including metallic shift dresses for women, day-glo shirts for men, a printed dress with an oversized photo of Bob Dylan and an original boho combo including a peasant style shirt and skirt.
It’s a transatlantic mood that sees UK and US designers and pop stars influencing the decade’s zeitgeist – blue cotton canvas ankle boots are printed with images of the Beatles, while Twiggy’s image is used to sell Trimfit tights. The London retail scene, the mods, the hippies and more are brought together in the show from March 6 to April 7, which shows how the underground quickly became the mainstream by the end of the decade.
The show is put on by the candidates for the Master of Arts in Fashion and Textile Studies.
