Alice Springs @ Galleria Carla Sozzani

The Galleria Carla Sozzani in Milan concept store 10 Corso Como is set to host an exhibition of Alice Springs’ photography.
Fans of fashion, photography and art should head down anytime between February 19 and 22 to catch the show, called People, which will bring together images from four decades of the Australian photographer’s work rounding up a selection of advertising and editorial, along with portraits and nudes.
Otherwise known as June Newton – and wife of photographer Helmut – Alice Springs’ accidental career in photography got a kickstart one day in 1970 when Mr Newton was too poorly to perform. He instructed June on how to work the equipment – light meter et al – and she set to work creating the imagery for an advertising campaign for Gitanes cigarettes. She went on to snag campaigns of her own and by 1974 had shot her first cover for French Elle.
Alice Springs reputation as a portraitist is examined in the Galleria’s show with an A-list roster of subjects spanning her forty years of work. The detailed black and white pictures adorning the white walls of the upstairs gallery will include a 1978 shot of a be-suited and spectacled Yves Saint Laurent; a 1987 shot of Gerhard Richter (whose own work is currently being celebrated at London’s Tate Modern); and a youthful image of proto supermodel Pat Cleveland from 1970 and more.
The show is being produced by the Helmut Newton Foundation. It opens on February 18 and is on show to the public from February 19 to 22.
