As the anticipation surrounding London Fashion Week continues to build, we look to the names that make the event one of the most exciting of the season, and continue to promote the edgy cool for which the city is renowned. Showing as part of the On|Off schedule, Viking Wong is one such name, his striking, recognisable aesthetic propelling him to one-to-watch status in a few short seasons. A graduate of the London College of Fashion, the designer cites fashion icons including Yohji Yamamoto, Ann Demeulemeester and Martin Margiela, their influence apparent in his design signature. Wong’s Eastern upbringing fuses with Western sensibilities to create conceptual shapes that reconcile androgyny and elegance. Fluid silhouettes and loose structures hint at a keen technical ability, yet retain a easy wearability, a commercial slant that dictates future success. A top five finalist in the Gen Art Styles Vision Award 2009 (by coincidence the year he graduated from the London College of Fashion) Wong’s star has firmly been on the ascent, and his SS2011 endeavours come highly anticipated.
